The Cymatic Water Tank Visualizer runs in a number of different modes. The first is as a DJ “mixing table.” Users can manipulate a MIDI controller to add and subtract resonant frequencies in the tank. In the tank’s secondary mode, users can play sound data of any kind through the table’s electronics to “see” music as well as hear it. For example, this past October we played seismograph data from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake at Science Hack Day in San Francisco, for which we won the “best data visualization” award. We have also shown the Cymatic Water Tank Visualizer as an installation at the California Academy of the Sciences, at the LAST (Life Art Science Technology) festival at Stanford University, and at the bay area Maker Faire. We completed this work as part of OpenLab Research at UCSC.
